From Lubbock Independent School District: 

As part of the Lubbock Area United Way’s second annual United We Read event, Lubbock ISD is hosting volunteers in all second-grade classrooms to promote reading to and with children.

More than 500 volunteers are participating in the event to read a book and lead craft activities for approximately 4,000 second-grade students in Lubbock County. Volunteers will read Thelma the Unicorn with the kids and complete a craft activity. Each student will receive a copy of the book to take home.

Volunteers at Lubbock ISD campuses represent many community organizations and businesses, including Texas Tech University, Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock Fire Rescue, Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, Covenant Health System, YWCA of Lubbock, Amerigroup, banks, United Way agencies, and many more. Members of the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees and numerous employees are also serving as volunteers.

Media availability for the event in Lubbock ISD will be at Honey Elementary School, 3615 86th St., where Superintendent Dr. Kathy Rollo will read to second-grade students alongside her niece, Monterey High School freshman Katie Kinnison. Additional options are available upon request.

The event begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, September 26.
