Update at 5:48 p.m.:  

Lovington Police Department:

Further investigation revealed Martin O. Nunez, 28, of Tatum, New Mexico, had made entry into the victim's residence the morning of the incident.

Nunez had been in a relationship with a woman who was temporarily staying at the victim's residence because she and Nunez had become recently estranged. The two were parents to an infant child who was also at the residence. 

There were reports made that Nunez had made past threats to harm anyone who became romantically involved with his baby's mother. After he entered the residence, an altercation ensued, during which the victim was stabbed multiple times. 

Nunez then fled the scene with the woman and their baby. Lovington Police issued an alert to surrounding agencies, and the car was successfully intercepted by deputies from the Lea County Sheriff's Office.

Nunez was arrested on Friday, July 19, without incident at a residence in Tatum. He is charged with murder in the first degree - a capital felony; aggravated burglary (armed after entry) - a second degree felony; child abuse - a third degree felony; false imprisonment - a fourth degree felony; and battery on a household member - a full misdemeanor.

He was booked in the Lea County Detention Center on a $300,00 cash-only bond which had been set by the Honorable Judge Mark Sanchez. The Fifth Judicial District Attorney's Office has indicated its intent to file a pre-trial detainer hold on Nunez.

Original story at 10:28 a.m.:

On Thursday, July 18, at approximately 8:07 a.m., Lovington Police Department's officers responded to a report of a domestic incident at a residence located in the 1300 block of South 5th Street in Lovington.

Ryan Madrid, 32, was found outside of a nearby residence with serious injuries. After Lovington Police attempted life-saving measures, Madrid was pronounced dead at Nor-Lea Hospital District a short time later.

The street where the incident occurred was closed for the remainder of the day as investigators executed search warrants and processed the scene.

This is an on-going investigation.
