Local oral surgeons are giving soldiers something to smile about.

Hill and Ioppolo and Facial Surgeons of Lubbock launched the Smiles for Soldiers program to give one lucky active soldier or veteran a full dental restoration free of charge.

These procedures would otherwise cost upwards of $40,000.

"I was in the Army for 13 years myself, nine years active duty and four years in the Reserves," said Oral and Facial Surgeon Robert Bryan Ioppolo. "So I'm very aware of the challenges that a lot of our men and women face in the military when they are discharged from the military, when they separate from service as far as being able to have on going medical and dental care."

The application period for Smiles For Soldiers opened September 12 and will run until October 12, 2017. Active soldiers and veterans in the community who are interested can apply online at Hill & Ioppolo and Facial Surgeons of Lubbock's website. The recipient will be announced November 11, 2017.
