Beaumont Republican Dade Phelan says he has the votes to become the next speaker of the Texas House. But Texas Republican Party Chairman Allen West says his party won't have it.

In an e-mail to supporters, West said the party won't support and will not accept Phelan leading the lower chamber. He says the party is perplexed that Phelan is seeking affirmation from Progressive Socialist Democrats to win the speakership.

West calls it utterly absurd and demonstrably idiotic that a Republican would side with Democrats when Republicans control the House.

West warns Phelan will appoint Democrats to chair powerful legislative committees and kill proposals intended to advance the Republican platform. West, of course, does not have a vote on speaker since he is not a member of the house.

Current speaker, Angleton Representative Dennis Bonnen, claimed Democratic support when he was elected in 2019.

West concluded his message to party members saying Texas will be led by Constitutional Conservatives, not "middle-of-the-road, road-kill individuals seeking alliance is Marxist, Socialist Leftists."
