Our Town Wolfforth: Chef at “Chez Sami” proud to serve community
WOLFFORTH, Texas (KJTV) - One of the area’s most popular restaurants, “Chez Sami,” is located in Wolfforth, and will soon see a second spot in downtown Lubbock. Jon Walter, owner and chef, says he will never leave his Wolfforth roots, largely because of the support he’s had there in town.
“They are a huge help to small businesses, to small restaurants, and they advocate for them and they market and they share, and it really ‘makes it rain’,” he said. “We get business through partnerships and relationships that we build with them, and really that why I love Wolfforth and want to stay here.”
Walter received much of his culinary training across the Atlantic Ocean.
“I would say the experiences that I learned in Europe from cooking, from eating, from traveling, were some of the most overlooked but most valuable in my life,” he said. Walter named the restaurant after his daughter, Sami.
Even though the building, located on 709 Main St., has seen many businesses come and go, Walter says he enjoys seeing the reaction from those who walk in for the very first time.
“I don’t know what everyone’s impression is when they pull up to the restaurant, because it really looks like a ‘hole-in-the-wall’, and I intentionally meant to keep it that way to give a little bit of allure,” the chef said. “So usually they say when they come in, ‘When I walk through the door, I realize that we’ve been transported somewhere else and this is a different place’, and they come in and we give them all the warm hospitality, all the great food and they really love the experience.”
