Police chase leads to injured officer, rollover near Clapp Park
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A police chase near Clapp Park has left one LPD officer injured after being run over and another injured in a crash.
Around 11:20 a.m. on Sept 5, police were notified of a suspicious vehicle on E 49th Street around Clapp Park. Police stated the vehicle was “doing donuts” in the parking lot. An officer ran the license plate of the SUV and confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen.
When the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the stolen SUV began to drive away, running over the officer in the process, according to police. As the officer was hit, he was able to fire his gun once at the vehicle, but did not hit any of the occupants. The officer has since been taken to UMC to treat moderate injuries.
The LPD Crime Suppression Unit pursued the SUV as it exited the parking lot to 50th Street and Avenue U. The vehicle then crashed into an uninvolved car. The SUV rolled over and came to a rest upside down. Police stated the three occupants exited the vehicle and attempted to run away.
The people were soon apprehended and have been taken into custody. They face possible aggravated assault of a police officer and stolen vehicle charges.
The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was taken to Covenant for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
Westbound and eastbound traffic on 50th Street is being diverted. The LPD’s Crime Suppression Unit, Major Crash Investigation Unit and Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit are still investigating.
The LPD encourage anyone who has information about the incident to call the police department.
Police have requested motorists avoid the area.
