Our Town Brownfield: Residents enjoy new aquatics center
BROWNFIELD, Texas (KCBD) - In most places, the best spot to go cool off from 100 degree temperatures is in the pool. In Brownfield, they haven’t been able to do that in two years. Finally, the wait is over.
In 2020, the Brownfield Aquatic Center shut down because of the Covid-19 pandemic. During the next year, they were dealing with a different problem.
“The big freeze hit. We didn’t realize that at the time when those pipes froze, that the freeze affected lines that were underneath the pool,” said Scott Jackson, Brownfield’s director of parks and recreation.
After two long years, the new-look pool opened on May 28th. Jackson says he already sees the positives.
“Number one, it gives kids someplace to go in the summertime. It gets them out of the house and in the pool and from where we started to where we are now, we couldn’t be more proud,” he said. “No. 1, it’s clean as you can see. No. 2, our lifeguards are well-trained, and No. 3, you know they like the fact that wherever you’re sitting, you can see your children.”
Adults who want to avoid the crowds can do so from 11 a.m. to noon. Along with the renovations, the color scheme has changed as well. The long-time look was red and yellow. Now, the slides are yellow and green.
“So, the people who had used the pool in the past like the new color scheme, but what we’ve always been told from especially out-of-towners, who really in the month of June and July, that’s what we get is mostly out-of-towners. The locals use it, but we get most of our people from out of town.”, Jackson said. “We’re proud of this facility, and anybody that comes into town- come out and take a look-see.”
