Lubbock agencies “bursting the bubble” against child abuse
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Blue ribbons and pinwheels can be seen all over Lubbock in the next month, all for an unfortunate reason. While many local agencies are raising awareness for Child Abuse Awareness Month, the problem in Texas has become so bad, texprotects.org states 184 child victims are confirmed on a daily basis.
“All children long for love and belonging, and just celebrating the joy they bring to us through their innocence, we want to just be able to enjoy that. And, that’s why we invited our neighbors in the neighborhood to join us as well,” said Cynthia Quintilla, executive director for the Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock.
On Friday morning, kids from Guadalupe Early Learning Center walked the short trek over to the Catholic Charities parking lot, and were presented with bubbles. The effort was to show how all youngsters should be able to enjoy their childhood- without any fear.
“The bubbles just represent- bringing awareness, breaking the silence of child abuse,” Quintilla says. :We need to bring awareness to this issue because Lubbock has one of the highest rates for child abuse in the State of Texas. We know that a lot of families that struggle with this issue don’t reach out for help. We know that they’re struggling, and we just want to be the ones that are here.”
Bubble-blowing wasn’t the only planned activity for the day. Kids at Guadalupe, along with others in Plainview took part in an Easter egg hunt- one with the same message.
