LUBBOCK, Texas (KJTV) - The Lubbock chapter of Habitat for Humanity is asking for the community’s help on their late-summer blitz build.

”You don’t have to have any skills. A pulse, half a brain, and a heart for Habitat. We’re gonna work you and change this city,” said Christy Reeves, the local executive director for Habitat.

The organization will attempt to build 13 homes in three days over the Labor Day weekend.

“When you can give people a decent place to live- they can actually purchase a home, build equity, experience home ownership, they’re gonna have a security they’ve never experienced which provides a foundation for their family to thrive,” Reeves said.

Lubbock Habitat leaders hope people will come out and help. Whether it’s a group of friends, business, or solo person, they can use the hands.

“Lubbock habitat for humanity believes in revitalization. We want to build up the community where we’re building houses,” Reeves said.

The build is on E. Dartmouth street in East Lubbock.

FOX34 caught up with a new Habitat homeowner, Lyric Harris.

“It means a lot to me. I’ve been working so hard to get to this moment and it’s finally here. So I’m excited,” Harris said.

Harris found out about Habitat homes through her aunt who is also an owner. She wants to keep the home in the family, hoping to pass it along to her son.

“To finally be a homeowner is exciting. I would like to eventually pass it down to him because renting can be hectic.”

Habitat is looking for sponsors for the build. They need food, canopies, and tools.

There are also opportunities each weekend throughout the year to help build homes.
