LUBBOCK, Texas -

Hundreds of Texas Tech Health Sciences Center students received their first white coats on Friday afternoon.

The incoming students for the School of Medicine Class of 2023 took part in the White Coat Ceremony at the Lubbock Civic Center. The coat represents years of hard work, dedication and is the first step into a career of medicine.

"The white coat symbolizes that not only are you a physician, but you're also going to be a person who is going to be a healer, a person who is going to take the vow at one point in your life to take care of those who are most vulnerable in our community and our society," Dr. Felix Morales, associate dean of admissions for the School of Medicine, said.

The new 180 TTUHSC medical students have a GPA of 3.78. The class includes students from schools across the country including Texas Tech, University of Texas at Austin, Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University.

About 5,000 students applied to the school, 1,000 were interviewed and 180 were selected to join the School of Medicine.
