Lubbock ISD combating teacher shortage with partnering programs

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The need for more teachers is a nationwide dilemma. Critics blame pay, a dislike for the profession and the growing pressure and expectations.

Lubbock ISD is expected to welcome nearly 300 new teachers this semester. That will replenish its overall staff, but it isn't easy to fill those gaps.

Rick Rodriguez, the HR assistant superintendent for Lubbock ISD, said the turnover rate for teachers in the district is fairly low. Spouse relocation, career changes and a lack of leadership positions all dictate the districts overall numbers.

"Then of course the simple thing is the teacher cadre is getting old," said Rodriguez. "So we have folks that leave because of retirement, we have to come back on the other end and replace those with brand new teachers that are coming in to the rank and file."

For years now Lubbock ISD has been partnering with Texas Tech and LCU. It uses an array of programs to encourage current students and recent grads to stay in West Texas. Rodriguez adds that at the end of the day the most important selling point is the city itself.

"Cost of living is absolutely wonderful, you're not going to find the type of places that you can find here in Lubbock Texas for the cost that you are going to pay in any other metropolitan area," said Rodriguez. "Our salary for our area is very, very competitive so I think that's one of the things that we have to sell."

Rodriguez said you don't have to be a teacher to join the team. If you have a bachelor's degree there's a job for you within the school district.
