Texas has the highest number of pool fatalities involving children

LUBBOCK, Texas -

About 350 children under the age of five drown in pools each year nationwide, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In addition, Texas has the highest number of pool fatalities involving children, according to recent data from the CDC.

The City of Lubbock's aquatics director, Jennifer Walker, said having a set of eyes on them in the water can make all the difference.

She said this is why its lifeguards are trained by the Red Cross and ready at a moment's notice.

"They train constantly, even before their shifts many times. They'll get in the water, they'll train, they'll make sure everything is running smoothly so that in case there is an emergency, we know how to handle that," Walker said.

Walker said supervision is just as, if not more important at residential pools as well.

"You can be the most experienced swimmer and still slip under. It only takes a second. Even non-experienced swimmers can find trouble doing the simplest things like crawling on the wall or staying afloat," Walker said.

She said it is also never too early to start a child on swim lessons.

"They may not be swimming laps across the pool, but they will learn how to float, and they will learn how to crawl on the wall. That way, if they ever fall in, maybe they can't swim back to safety, but they can bob up and down in the water or stay afloat to have that opportunity to yell for help," Walker said.
