LUBBOCK, Texas -

The City of Lubbock closed the application process for its chief of police position Thursday, which means prospective candidates will be narrowed down in the coming weeks.

A two-time interim chief for the department, Jerry Brewer has been around the block in terms of this search.

He said it is the biggest decision the city will have.

"The police department has always been counted on to be there 24/7, so the job of police chief is very important to manage that, set the goals and expectations, and to meet the concerns that citizens may have in their particular areas of the city," Brewer said.

Brewer said the recent uptick in charges against juveniles shows there needs to be a better plan toward fighting this issue.

He said he believes the solution starts in neighborhoods.

"You know, there's other members of this community who have a future in the stake of our youth. I think it probably needs a 'coming together' to what are the mechanisms going on that cause the decision to be made for violent crime," Brewer said.

Brewer said he also wants to stress the importance of timeliness for the new chief, both in terms of handling the media and enforcing the law.

"The number of violent crimes that we've had where we've had shootings and murders, we've been able to make arrests within 24 to 48 hours. I think when we do make arrests, we make announcements on them, and if you go back and look, it's pretty quick," Brewer said.

Reflecting on his time as interim chief, Brewer said he hopes whoever fills the position is simply the best one for the job.

"It's a great job. There's some challenges there, but every day is a new day, a new challenge, and it just goes by quick. I've already been here a month and a half since I've been the interim chief. Right now, we're in the midst of the budget session, and that has its challenges as well, but it's just a wonderful job," Brewer said.
