Gov. Abbott declares July Watch Your Car Month

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Governor Abbott declared July to be Watch Your Car Month. 

Motorists and businesses in Texas have estimated nearly 1 billion in losses due to motor vehicle burglary and theft every year. According to Texas law enforcement officials, motorists run the greatest risk of having their car stolen during the summer months.

The If you Like It - Lock It Campaign was launched by county singer and songwriter Gary P. Nunn to raise awareness for the necessary steps and precautions to take when locking a motor vehicle. 

Lubbock is rated the worst in the state with 102 car thefts reported in May. 

"With us being ranked number one, it has kinda thrown a light on the situation for us, we've really have been trying to work hard on educating the public and making sure everybody is aware of the situation were dealing with," Jennifer Anderson, Crime Prevention Coordinator, said.

The Commissioner's Court, the South Plains Auto Theft Task Force and the Lubbock County District Attorney's Office wants special emphasis to alert its citizens to lock their vehicles, take their keys and hide their belongings.
