New Mexico State Police investigating shooting involving Clovis officer

CLOVIS, New Mexico -

On Saturday, July 5, Clovis police responded to a domestic disturbance near Wallace Street and East Manana Blvd.

Officers found Damon Smith, 42, yelling at officers from inside the home, according to police.

Investigators report officers ordered Smith to come out of the house, but Smith brandished a rifle towards officers. In response an officer shot at Smith, according to investigators. Smith was not struck or injured.

The CPD SWAT Team arrived and tried negotiating with Smith but had to utilize a taser. He was taken into custody without incident.

Smith is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault on a household member and resisting, evading or obstructing a peace officer.

The New Mexico State Police Investigation Bureau is continuing the investigation.
