City of Lubbock to host 2019 Ironman Triathlon

LUBBOCK, Texas -

More than 1,300 athletes will race around Lubbock this weekend to qualify for a world-wide Ironman Triathlon.

Two teams this year will include athletes with disabilities. The triathlon will start with swimming at Dunbar Lake, then transition to bikes for a ride through the Canyon Lakes Area. The last leg of the race will be a two mile run around the Texas Tech campus, finishing at AT&T Jones Stadium.

"They come in town early to climatize, so they're very excited for the new course," Ironman 70.3 Race Director Marti Greer said. "They love racing in Lubbock because of the people, our people are so friendly, and we have all those people represent our volunteers on the bike course, on the run course, on the swim course. So yes, they love it."

The City's all on board with the race. It will involve closing University Ave. between the Marsha Sharp Freeway and 19th Street Saturday.
