The City of Slaton has confirmed the deaths of City Councilman James A. "Buster" Tucker and its Mayor Darwin Williams "Dubbin" Englund.

According to city officials, Englund died Tuesday, May 28, at Lubbock UMC after suffering a brief illness. He was 70.

Englund was a community leader and avid community supporter. He joined the Slaton Volunteer Fire Department in 1976 and served as Fire Chief from 1995 to 2000. He was currently serving as Slaton's Mayor, a position he held since May 2009. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served in several capacities.

Funeral services for Englund will be held Thursday, May 30, at 2:00 p.m. in the Slaton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Cleve Kerby and Rev. Judy Shema officiating. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. 

Tucker died on Thursday, May 23. He was 75. According to Tucker's obituary, he served in law enforcement for more than 42 years and served on the Slaton City Council for more than 20 years. 

Memorial services for Tucker will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, at First United Methodist Church in Slaton. 

The City of Slaton issued the following release Tuesday afternoon:

It is with great sadness that the City of Slaton announces the loss of two long time city leaders, Mayor D.W. Englund, and City Commissioner James "Buster" Tucker. Funeral services and arrangemens will both be held under the direction of Englunds Funderal Home.

The City of Slaton operations will continue under the direction of Mayor Pro-Tem Lynn Nowlin, and Comissionsers Benny Lopez and Weldon "Squeaky" Self.

The leadership of the City of Slaton, overseen by City Administrator Mike Lamberson does not foresee any changes to the daily operations of the city at this time.

The two vacancies will be filled during the next uniform election date in November.

All City offices will be closed Thursday at 1:00 p.m. for Mayor Englund's funderal and Friday at 2:00 p.m. for Commissioner Tucker's memorial service.
