LP&L announces lower electric rates starting June 1

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The warmer months are coming which means higher electricity bills.

LP&L is lowering its pass-thru rates starting June 1, making customer's monthly bills lower than last year. That rate makes up 70 percent of electricity bills.

Customers with all electric will see an 8.5 percent decrease in their bills compared to last summer. Customers with electric and natural gas will see about a 7 percent decrease.

"It's important to make sure you make a true comparison when you look at this decrease in rates. You can't compare your April bill to July bill because the consumption can be very different," Matt Rose, with LP&L, said, "but if you look at this summer's bills, June, July or August, and you compare them to last summer and your usage has stayed the same, you will see that decrease in cost."

LP&L is able to lower the rate because the cost of natural gas is pretty low right now and it has a new contract with its power provider.

LP&L will revisit the rates in the fall.
