South Plains Food Bank to host 10th annual Summer of Sharing Food Drive

LUBBOCK, Texas -

School is almost out for the summer.

It can be a fun time, but for students who do not know where their next meals are coming from, these months can be difficult.

The South Plains Food Bank aims to help these students with its 10th annual Summer of Sharing Food Drive.

"The Summer of Sharing Food Drive is where we get a few sponsors, and we want to raise money for our kids that were depending on the free and reduced lunch program during the school months," Vanessa Morelion, communications manager of the South Plains Food Bank, said.

Summer means fewer volunteers and fewer donations for the food bank, Morelion said.

To help make up for the shortage, this food drive was started 10 years ago.

"It was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They spent a lot of time with us, and they wanted to start this program," Morelion said. "So, we jumped right in and it was good for the South Plains Food Bank cause it brought in a lot of donations."

The food bank serves more than 20 counties in the South Plains.

"In Lubbock County alone, there's nearly 30,000 food insecure children, and that's just children, so its about 56,000 people that are food insecure in Lubbock," Morelion said.

With this many potential clients, volunteers are even more crucial during the summer, she said. Kids are out of school and families tend to leave the city.

"We only have a about 50 employees here, and to be able to make the amount of food boxes that we need to reach the Lubbock community, and also the surrounding communities, we need a lot more help," Morelion said.

The SPFB accepts donations of shelf-stable food items such as beans, pasta, peanut butter and cereal. Non-perishable canned food is always welcome, Morelion said.

Community involvement is what will help sustain the bank in the next few months, she said.

"We don't want to turn anybody away, we want to be able to have enough to give to our families," Morelion said.
