LUBBOCK, Texas -

It took the Lubbock County jury about 15 minutes to reach a verdict.

Carlos Martinez, 34, struck three Lubbock police officers with a vehicle back in April 2017. The officers were treated and released the same day. Martinez spent a day on the run before his arrest.

Officers were on the scene of an eviction when Martinez escaped. The officers were going to arrest him for unrelated warrants.

During the punishment phase of the trial, prosecutors painted Martinez as a repeat offender. He has a history of theft and burglary dating back to 2003, and he spent two years in prison for burglary.

Martinez was also convicted of evading arrest in 2016. Deputy Chris Garza, with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, testified Martinez escaped a traffic stop and led deputies on a chase.

Rosa Martinez, Martinez's mother, testified for the defense. She detailed her son's upbringing with an abusive father, and the death of two siblings in a drunk driving crash in 1991.

Testimony for the defense in Martinez's punishment resumes Friday. He faces 15 years to life in prison.
