LUBBOCK, Texas -

Eight students in Lubbock county have a head start on paying for college thanks to the Community Foundation of West Texas.

Each student was awarded a $20,000 scholarship, focusing on science, technology, engineering and math. The Community Foundation selected them for how motivated they are to pursue those areas.

"When I review these applications I feel like I need to get a third degree because these kids are so amazingly talented," Michelle Tosi-Stephens with the Community Foundation said. "And it's not just education, but they're also well-versed. So, you know, they're multi-taskers and I think that's a very important thing when you're going into college."

Each scholarship is split across four years in college to any school they choose, as long as they stay in STEM. Since 2007. the Community Foundation of West Texas has awarded nearly $1.3 million in scholarships.
