LUBBOCK, Texas -

The longest-running retail partner in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, The United Family has donated more than 440,000 pounds of apples and fed more than 100,000 families in nine years of participation.

Produce Director Joseph Bunting said United is proud to stand food banks across West Texas in their work to eliminate food insecurity.

"Over the years we've really put more and more emphasis on having fresh produce in the food that we distribute to the families that we serve. And apples are such a gift because they're nutritious, they're tasty, people like them, but so often many of the families we serve aren't able to purchase them on their own," South Plains Food Bank CEO David Weaver said. "So when we can include those in the food boxes we distribute, it's a wonderful gift to our clients and our families."

Since Take a Bite out of Hunger was introduced in 2010, more than 1.2 million pounds of fresh apples have been donated to local food banks in the name of the participating retailers with donations going to local food banks across the U.S. and Canada.
