LUBBOCK, Texas -

28 officers from the South Plains are headed to San Antonio for the Special Olympics Texas State Summer Games.

Law enforcement has been involved in the torch run send off for 30 years. Officers will make stops through Lubbock-cooper, Tahoka and Brady. For the athletes it's not just about competition, but creating relationships with each other and law enforcement.

"It's amazing to see the hugs and the smiles in everything that we get. So, as much as I want to say yeah, it's all about everybody winning first place, it really is about seeing the friendships and the high fives and the smiles. I get so much joy out of that. It's absolutely amazing to see it." Ashley Pena, Special Olympics Executive Director, said.

The West Texas Special Olympics has raised $24,000 so far this year.
