Fans say Beard's $27 million extension is 'worth every penny'

LUBBOCK, Texas -

After leading the program into the history books in back-to-back years, including a National Championship berth, Texas Tech rewarded Chris Beard with another contract extension. The university will pay him $27 million over the next six years. That's about four and a half million per year. 

This makes him the third highest paid coach in the nation behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewsi (7.05 million) and Kentucky's John Calipari (9.3 million). Red Raiders say he's worth it. 

"He deserves every penny of that, and I can't wait to see him coach through the 2024 season. He should be the number one paid coach since he's so excellent. He has just really transformed our team and I can't wait to see what happens next season," one Texas Tech junior said.

If Beard were to leave for a Big 12 school, or one in Texas, his buyout starts at six million. It drops one million per season until the final year. If he leaves for another NCAA school, it starts at three million and decreases half a million per season until the final year.
