LUBBOCK, Texas -

170 medical students at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center know where they will serve their residencies. It's part of national Match Day.

The nerve-wracking tradition started in the 1950s.

Dr. Steven Berk, the dean of the School of Medicine, says it's the most efficient way for students to land at the best place that wants them.

"They've been pondering what places they want to go and then they put it in order of preference," Dr. Berk explained. "But they don't know until they open that envelope where they really wound up matching. It's a much more competitive environment now than its ever been before, but nevertheless, they have done amazingly well."

One in five students will stay at a Tech residency program.
