LUBBOCK, Texas -

Murder suspect Dave Bethel, 43, pleaded guilty to the murder of Shawn Summers Tuesday. He's been sentenced to 40 years.

Lubbock County Sheriff's deputies reported two unrelated homicides in October 2015. Deputies investigated a report of gunshots just outside the city limits near 82nd Street and Ash Avenue.

About two hours later, deputies were dispatched to a report of a burning vehicle about 1.5 miles east of Loop 289 on 19th Street. They found Summers' body inside a vehicle that had multiple bullet holes in the driver side door.

According to LSO detectives, earlier that evening Summers had cell phone contact with 45-year old Kristina Marie Thoeny, also known as Kris Brinkley. Investigators said Thoeny lured Summers to 86th Street and Ash Avenue "with the promise of sexual favors." The report indicates Thoeny's cell phone number and Facebook pictures matched multiple ads on the escort website Investigators reported Thoeny is a friend of the suspect's cousin, Dave Bethel.

The body of the second murder victim, 35-year old Jessica Payton, was found in a creek on Nov. 1 near County Road 3600 and East CR 7300, northeast of Slaton. Her body was wrapped in a comforter and weighted down with cinder blocks.

His cousin Mark Bethel is a co-defendant in the murder of Summers. His case is still pending.
