High risk for wildfires and very strong wind today

High risk for wildfires and very strong wind today

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It was a cool and cloudy weekend. Last night we had some light showers that moved through some areas bringing a few hundredths of an inch in precipitation. We will still continue a small chance for light precipitation through the morning, especially for the southern counties.

TODAY: Clouds will stick around the morning hours then clearing this afternoon. High near 62, but the wind will be an issue with blowing dust likely. West/southwest wind will pick up 25-40mph with gust to 55-60mph. A Red Flag Warning is in place for much of the area meaning a high wildfire risk. The strong wind will be dry so be cautious with things that could start a fire, as it can quickly spread over a large area. So be mindful of cigarettes and anything that could spark and cause a grass fire.
?

TONIGHT: A weak front will bring a northwesterly wind that will back off after midnight. The front will drop lows around 10-20 degrees with a clear sky.

TUESDAY: A nice cool afternoon with highs near average in the upper 50s and low 60s with lots of sunshine.

EXTENDED: Stronger wind returning with warmer temperatures through Thursday. There will be some clouds on and off, but we will stay dry through the weekend. Long range models are showing a cool down, but disagreeing how far these cold temperatures last. For now I am going 50s with lows in the 30s for the weekend.

Have a great Monday, and remember to be mindful of cigarettes and anything that could spark and cause a grass fire. Matt will have the next updated forecast tonight on the News at Nine.
