CONROE, Texas – Off to its best start since 2011, the Texas Tech softball team finished the Lone Star Collegiate Classic with a perfect 5-0 record after clipping the Lamar Cardinals 3-1, Sunday afternoon.
Starter Missy Zoch (1-0) fanned two hitters in 3.2 innings before sophomore Erin Edmoundson finished the game for her fourth win of the season. The duo limited Lamar to just one hit through seven full innings.
Junior Karli Hamilton led the Texas Tech offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate while the team tallied eight hits on the day.
Scoring first for the third time this weekend, Tech took the lead in the first inning after Hamilton ignited the offense with a single to short. Two consecutive walks juiced the bases for Breanna Russell and, on two outs, the sophomore ripped a sacrifice fly deep into right-center to score Hamilton from third.
The Red Raiders kept the foot on the gas pedal through the next inning as Yvonne Whaley turned on the wheels, beating out a throw from short for an infield single. With one out, Heaven Burton bunted her over to second and Hamilton brought her home with her second hit of the day.
A trio of spotless frames kept Zoch and the Tech defense perfect through three innings but Lamar chipped away at Tech's lead in the top of the fourth after one walk and a two-out single plated one run. Edmoundson got the call to take over the inning and she quickly squandered the Cardinal comeback with a strikeout.
Tech extended its lead two innings later when Burton used a one-out bunt to reach base. After she stole second, Taylor Satchell picked up her sixth RBI of the weekend and drove her in on a crushed double to center field to give the Red Raiders a 3-1 advantage.
A Tech error put Lamar's leadoff hitter on base to start the top of the seventh but, after a fly out and Edmoundson's fifth strikeout, relief catcher Kelcy Leach gunned down a runner stealing second to seal the 3-1 win for the Red Raiders.
