DWI victim memorialized with US 87 sign

LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas -

If you drive down US 87, you will see a memorial and reminder to others to not drink and drive.

In 2016, Carlos Nevarez, Jr. was sentenced to 12 years in prison for intoxicated manslaughter and eight years for DWI. He killed 51-year-old Patrick Haden, plowing into the victim's vehicle when he ran a stop sign.

"It's a no win situation, there's no reason to drink and drive," Patrick's brother, Guy Haden said.

While the killer, Carlos Nevarez is in prison, the family wants to do what it can to save other families from the heartache.

"If you drive down the highway and see this sign and they look at it and they say, you know what, I was going to do that, I'm not going to do that tonight, It's a successful for us," Haden said.

This moment has been 14 months in the making, but his brother believes it is a symbol of what Patrick Haden stood for.

"He didn't care if he knew your name," Haden said. "If you needed help and he was able to help you, he would help."

While it is not easy to live a life without him, it helps to know, Patrick's still making a difference.

"Every time I try to remember the good times with him," Haden said. "I always wind up back in that hospital room where we were unplugging his life support, and I'm struggling getting over that."

Haden said originally he was going to fund the sign on his own, but after friends found out about the memorial, they pitched in.
