County projects 30-year bond not enough for $50 million Lubbock

County projects 30-year bond not enough for $50 million Lubbock County Expo Center

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Three months ago, voters passed the special bond election to create the new Lubbock County Expo Center.

The original expectation for the Lubbock County Expo Center included a $50 million, 30-year bond using the hotel motel occupancy tax and rental car tax.

Voters approved raising the occupancy tax by two percent to generate that revenue.

However, Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish said it is projected to fall well short.

"Just depending on the hotel occupancy tax, we're looking at about just a little under $25 million," Parrish said.

Randy Jordan, the chairman of the center's steering committee, said the project is still on track, despite this setback.

"We knew from the beginning that the revenue bond was not going to be able to cover what it is we are looking to do with the arena," Jordan said.

Because of this, Jordan said the committee is going to rely on private funding for the Lubbock County Expo Center.

"We're somewhat relieved that now we maybe do have a number, that we've got a starting place and we know what it is, so we've been prepared and are preparing to approach the general public for help," Jordan said.

While the path may be re-routed, Parrish said the goal remains.

"To make sure that this building becomes a facility that's going to be nice, it's going to be used by the citizens of Lubbock County for the next 40 to 50 years," Parrish said.

Committee Chairman Jordan said he stresses the project is still expected to move forward and be completed in 2021.
