Texas legislature convenes 140-day session

Posted: Updated:

The 140-day Texas legislative session is underway.

As chair of the House Republican Caucus, Lubbock Representative Dustin Burrows nominated Angleton Republican Dennis Bonnen as House Speaker. He won unanimous support.

The new Speaker pledges to keep the legislature from getting caught up in politics that don't lead to real results.

Bonnen's legislative priorities are school funding, school safety, fighting human trafficking and reforming property taxes.

Notably absent from gaveling in the State Senate was Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. He was in Washington for a meeting with President Trump ahead of Tuesday night's address.

In his stead, Senator Jane Nelson became the first woman to gavel in the upper chamber on opening day.

Governor Abbott urges senators to make a difference, specifically on school finance and property taxes.

Sine Die is May 27. 139 days to go.
