LUBBOCK, Texas -

Voters approved changing Lubbock County's hotel-motel occupancy tax rate. This raises it by two percent, to 15, in order to fund building and operating the Lubbock County Expo Center.

This increase, along with a five-percent hike in the car rental tax, is estimated to raise $50 million for a bond.

"We are hoping that people are seeing the vision and see what we were looking to do so now," said Randy Jordan, chairman of the Expo Center steering committee.

"We'll have an event center that'll be equal to or better than our neighbors, and something that'll really be good. We feel like it'll bring a lot of extra things, events to Lubbock."

The location is on North University Avenue near the North Loop.

Jordan says he's prepared to work with the new county judge and commissioners.
