LUBBOCK, Texas -

For the third consecutive year, members of veterans groups around Lubbock, including the purple heart, VFW and remember our heroes, honor an organization with the Russ Murphy Service Award.

Steve Oien with the Lubbock Purple Heart said he is grateful for Second Baptist Church's longstanding commitment to veterans.

"Second baptist church for the last five years has hosted a memorial day service for our community. And we're here today to recognize second baptist church for that event," Oien said.

He said the award is named after Russ Murphy due to his support and dedication to veterans over the years. He added Murphy and his wife are at the event performing songs they have written about veterans.
