LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock Police Department emphasize its community policing, during "National Night Out" at Mae Simmons Community Center.

Neighborhood kids and young adults are encouraged to help prevent crime and strengthen relationships with the officers that fight it.

"I think events like this can start helping some of that development and I hope to continue to have events like this where we do do more development in East Lubbock. Me being from East Lubbock, and caring so much about it, we just need to do all we can to enhance our community," AJ McCleod, with East Lubbock Community Alliance, said.

Other "National Night Out" events hosted at the Maggie Trejo super-center and Brentwood neighborhood.

Grammy award-winning Latino artist Javier Galvan, from Grupo Fama, played for attendees at Copper Rawlings Community Center.
