Lubbock woman receives 'outpouring of love' following elevator fall

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Saturday marked a step forward in a Lubbock woman's recovery journey.

After falling down an elevator crushed her legs in February, doctors doubted Rhonda Stuart would walk again. She suffered crushed legs, ruptured vertebrae, and a fractured pelvis.

Friends and family joined together for a benefit at Rooster's BBQ to raise money to assist in her journey. More than $3,000 poured in at the door.

"When this happened I believe they talked about possibly taking one of her legs, then told her, well she'll never walk again and so, nuh-uh, she's going to walk. So that's how that all started, just anything we can do to help her," friend Ticia Edwards said.

"All of these friends and family showing up is the most overwhelming thing I've ever been through it's amazing. It's just an outpouring of love that I've never known and I can't talk about it without crying," Stuart said.

She is now able to stand on her left leg. Two rods will be removed from her right leg at the end of the month. After that procedure, Stuart's hopeful she'll walk again.
