Lubbock families to take part in 'Kids to Parks Day'

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Families are encouraged to bring their children to Lubbock parks for "Kids to Parks Day" this Saturday to utilize Lubbock’s park system.

National "Kids to Parks Day" is a project of the National Park Trust. It's a nationally coordinated day designed to connect kids and families with their local, state, and national parks.

Mayor Dan Pope said it's an opportunity for the city to show off its fitness, recreation, health and education programs. Its something the city's invested an extra million dollars in this fiscal year.

"For so many of us, this becomes a personal thing. 'This is my park.' This is where I took my kids to go fish, to play on the playground, to go on picnics. This is where I now take my grandkids to do those same things, so we encourage folks to get off the couch, get the kids outside, they love it, it'll wear 'em down, and you'll have memories that you'll make as you come out here," Nancy Neill with the Parks and Recreation Department said.

The City of Lubbock maintains approximately 3,000 acres of park land and numerous amenities including:

 •  47 Basketball Courts
 •  2 Bike Trails
 •  3 Disc Golf Courses
 •  2 Dog Parks
 •  34 Parks with Walking Trails
 •  19.41 Miles of Trails
 •  56 Playgrounds
 •  2 Skate Parks
 •  51 Tennis
 •  35 Volleyball Courts
 •  7 Multi-use Courts
