American Red Cross rolls out Red Cross giving day

LUBBOCK, Texas -

75 years ago president Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the month of March as red cross month honoring the organizations humanitarian mission. The red cross is continuing a national initiative that started a few years back called, Red Cross Giving Day, focusing on the idea of helping one family. On March 28th the agency will roll out this 24 hour online fundraising event.

"The idea behind the Red Cross giving day is that we ask the public to help us help one family," said Laura Hann, executive director of the American Red Cross serving the South Plains. "We think about that one family that shows up at our shelter during a disaster and needs help."

All funds raised through the Help One Family campaign will go to help families in the south plains and those who live in devastated areas.

"The help one family campaign is really thinking about these big disasters where we are opening shelters, where entire communities have been impacted, but here locally we are responding to," said Hann. "I mean this year we are going to be over 300 families that have reached to us this year and have said you know we had a disaster that made our home unsafe for us to be in and we need your help."
