Going out on the boat for spring break? Wear a life jacket

Posted: Updated:

Game wardens are reminding boaters to be safe if you're on the water this spring break.

Warden Aaron Sims says the most important safety requirement is to wear a life jacket.

"They're your seat belts for the water," he said. "In fact anyone under the age of 13 has to have wear a life jacket secured when they're on the water, underway. It's very important. Yeah, we're not going to cut any slack on that. You want to have those kids buckled up in the appropriate life jacket."

Seventy-five percent of recreational boating fatalities and 85 percent of those who drowned in 2015 were not wearing life jackets, according to the coast guard.

The public can find which items are required on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website: https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/pwd_br_l2000_0001/
