LUBBOCK, Texas – For the second time in his Red Raider career, Texas Tech senior Fredrik Nilehn has been named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month, the league office announced Wednesday.
This is Nilehn's second monthly honor, joining the nod he got on Oct. 5, 2016, for the same award.
In a month in which he was named to the Hogan and Haskins award watch lists, Nilehn backed it up with great play on the course. He made a late flurry of birdies to finish off a final-round 65 (His best round as a Red Raider), tying for the individual victory at the Desert Classic (-14), getting up-and-down from a tough bunker on 18 in the process. Paired with his 15th-place finish in Hawaii at the Amer Ari Invitational, he has recorded a top-15 finish in each tournament so far this season.
He put up these impressive numbers and finishes against great competition, as Tech faced off against a combined 13 teams ranked in Golfstat's top-40 at these two tournaments, where the Red Raiders earned runner-up honors both times.
Nilehn's 68.8 scoring average in February easily led the Red Raiders, and his 69.4 average this season has led to his top-10 individual ranking in Golfstat. He is also currently No. 1 in the European Palmer Cup rankings.
Tech is currently in action at the final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate, in Las Vegas. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
