South Plains Council of Boy Scouts now open to girls

Posted: Updated:

The South Plains Council of Boy Scouts is about to go unisex.

The new family scouting model opens cub scouting to both boys and girls.  Existing packs may choose to establish a new girl pack, a co-ed pack consisting of girl dens and boy dens or remain an all-boy pack.

Cub Scout dens will be single gender -- all boys or all girls.

"The life lessons he's learned, the things he's got to participate in, it makes me very proud to bring my daughters into that, give them the same opportunities that he has," Scout Master Lumpy Ball said.

"The Boy Scouts do offer extra STEM courses, which will help encourage the kids to explore those different, male-dominated jobs," one supporter said.

Scout administrators say this unique approach allows the organization to maintain the integrity of the single-gender model, while also meeting the needs of today's families.
