Health department requesting city approval for TTUHSC contract

Posted: Updated:

Keeping Lubbock healthy starts with assessing the needs of the community.

The Public Health Department is requesting city council approve a contract with TTUHSC to conduct a community health needs assessment.

The contract would allow the Marie Hall Institute of Rural and Health Community to find out what health measures are available throughout Lubbock and where resources are needed.

Public Health Director Katherine wells says doing so is the first step in moving forward with strategic planning processes.

"Do we need to focus on chronic disease, are there issues with diabetes in the community? What types of public health interventions can we do, as a whole community, both with the health department and all of our other partners, to see changes in our whole health overall?"

The assessment will first collect data starting with community member focus groups then surveys of key stakeholders like doctors and physicians. From there, a health improvement plan will be created from looking at Lubbock's overall health.
