The Lubbock-Cooper boys basketball team begins the UIL state playoffs Tuesday night with a bi-district round game versus Canyon Randall at Wayland Baptist University.

Lubbock-Cooper (18-13, 5-5 4-5A), winners in four out of the last 6 games, are representing district 4-5A as the 2nd seed after winning a coin toss with two other district rivals. It was a three-way tie after the regular season between the Pirates, Monterey, and Lubbock High. The Raiders (18-13, 10-6 3-5A) earned the 3rd seed in their district after beating Amarillo Caprock 40-39 in overtime in the last game of the season.

Lubbock-Cooper will be searching for their first bi-district championship in the 5A classification. The Pirates have won 6 bi-district championships in the smaller classifications since 2000-2001. LCP won an area championship in 2008 defeating Fort Stockton 58-40. The farthest Lubbock-Cooper has advanced in the playoffs was in 2007-2008 as they made it to the regional quarterfinal falling to Brownfield 66-45.

The Pirates will be playing at Wayland Baptist University for the 3rd straight year to open the playoffs. The Hutcherson Center has not been kind to Lubbock-Cooper as they have dropped the last two games played there to Canyon High (69-50) and Amarillo High (59-29). Canyon Randall has also had Lubbock-Cooper’s number in recent years as the Raiders and Lady Raiders have beat and knocked out the Pirates and Lady Pirates. Girls basketball in back to back years, baseball in 2017 in the bi-district round, and football in 2017 Randall stopped LCP at the 2 yard line to defeat the Pirates 22-17 at Kimbrough Stadium.
