Lubbock ISD educates students on digital awareness

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Educators are always looking for ways to implement new technology to make learning fun, comfortable and effective, but access to the internet come with plenty of pitfalls.

Lubbock ISD is bringing net-books into the classroom and with them, new training. Sherry Mitchell, the digital learning coordinator said it is one of the most effective ways to learn if you are careful.

"That goes back to training teachers," Mitchell said. "So we are very big in our district on making sure our teachers know how to use tools effectively."

Those teachers are then passing on their knowledge to students, Mitchell said an important issue they address is talking with strangers online.

"They assume that anybody they talk to online, if they're gaming with somebody online, it's safe because they're kids like us," Mitchell said. "But we try to teach them, that's not necessarily true."

A growing concern is cyber bullying, Mitchell said the district has zero tolerance for it.

"If they're being bullied, they need to report it," Mitchell said. "Most of them are afraid to say things but they need to report that right away because consequences can happen."
