H-E-B names Frenship principal as Excellence in Education award finalist

H-E-B names the principal at Frenship Middle School a finalist for its 2018 Excellence in Education award.

Jerry Jarabek also gets a $1,000 for his work and a $2,500 donation to the school itself.

The Excellence in Education program is one of the largest monetary awards for educators in the nation.

The pep rally-style assembly was a complete surprise with Jarabek at the center.

"I don"t do this for the recognition, I don't do it -- I mean, nobody gets into education for the paycheck, unless they're stupid -- it's not going to make you rich," Jarabek said. "This is a great business, I get to change kids' lives, I get to make a difference, and for me that was the most important thing, and I wanted a career where i knew what i did mattered."

All 40 finalists, including teachers and principals, will compete for more cash prizes.

The statewide winners will be announced in May.
