Lady Pirates: The No. 15 Lubbock-Cooper girls basketball team opens up the playoffs with a rematch from last years bi-district playoff game with the Randall Lady Raiders. Last season the Lady Pirates were the 2nd seed out of 4-5A and RHS was the 3rd seed in 3-5A. This season Lubbock-Cooper won the district championship and will be the number one seed going up the against the number 4 seed this time around. Randall ended the Lady Pirates season a year ago defeating LCP 70-40 at Wayland Baptist University. “Their first five is really good and solid.” Lovorn said of Randall. “Their point guard is quick, they’ve got a three-point shooter on the outside, and they’ve got some size inside with their post players. We’re going to have to come ready to play, last year they really got after us on defense and came out real aggressive, that’s kind of been our forte this year. We hope we can match it on Tuesday night. The key for us is going to be the amount of pressure and aggressiveness that we can come out with and how tough we can play.” The two teams met earlier this season on December 5th at Randall High School, Lubbock-Cooper won 71-70 behind Jacey Hise scoring 19 points. The Lady Pirates clinched the 4-5A district championship with the win over Coronado on January 30th. It’s the first district championship since 2012-2013 and the first district championship in the 5A classification. The Lady Pirate basketball program has won a total of 9 district championships with the first coming in 1981-1982. Lubbock-Cooper went undefeated in district play with a 10-0 record for the first time since 2008-2009 as the Lady Pirates won district 1-3A with a 10-0 record and went on to the regional final. The Lady Pirates stayed at number 15 in the newly released TABC rankings for the week of February 12th. The 31 wins on the season is the most wins in a season since 2012-2013 when Lubbock-Cooper finished the season 30-5 and advanced to the regional semifinals in the playoffs.
