Softball: Season Preview: 2018 Lubbock-Cooper Lady Pirates

A new era of Lubbock-Cooper softball will begin in 2018 as Liz White will start her 1st season as the head coach of the Lady Pirates. Former coach Landon Winton stepped away from coaching after 9 seasons at Lubbock-Cooper to take a role as an administrator at the high school. Winton won over 200 games claiming 6 district championships, 8 bi-district championships, and advanced to the regional semifinals three times in three seasons from 2011-2013.
Liz White comes from Colorado City where she spent time as both an assistant and head coach for the Lady Wolves. In 2016, White’s first season as the head coach, Colorado City advanced to the state tournament falling one game shy of a state title. Before losing to West in the championship game, the Lady Wolves upset top-ranked Brock in the Class 3A semifinals 5-2. After the state tournament run White was named All-Big Country Coach of the Year for the 2016 season. Also new to the program will be White’s husband Clint White who has been an assistant under Liz for the last two seasons at Colorado City. Clint also coaches for the football program as he serves as the JV Bucs Offensive Coordinator. Caleb Henderson returns as an assistant coach for the Lady Pirates in 2018. Henderson has been at Lubbock-Cooper since 2012 and is also on the LCP volleyball coaching staff.
Lubbock-Cooper will return 14 players from a season ago lead by the 2017 LSV Hitter of the Year Reagan Robertson. Robertson batted .447 in 2017 with a double-digit home run total while driving in 44 RBI. In the circle, LCP returns Marli Goolsby and Autumn White who both can also play on the diamond defensively. White recorded 10 wins last season posting a 2.90 ERA while Goolsby led the team with 77 strikeouts and held district opponents batting average to .170. The Lady Pirates will also have back Callie Box, Posey Pence, Kaitlyn Klemke, Sloan Payton and Theron Zachary amongst others.
Lubbock-Cooper will open the season February 13th versus Amarillo High and will play in three tournaments (Lubbock, Abilene Wylie, San Marcus) as they prepare for district play beginning on March 20th vs Lubbock High. District 4-5A consists of five other teams that Lubbock-Cooper will play in Monterey, Lubbock High, Coronado, Abilene Cooper and San Angelo Lakeview. Coronado, also with a new head coach (Nancy Sawyers) has won their district championship the last 22 years. Other notable non-district games include games @ Canyon (2/20) @ Odessa Permian (2/27) Frenship (3/6) and @ Odessa High (3/16).
