LUBBOCK, Texas -

According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use leads to about 88,000 deaths each year.

Stephen O'Dell, co-owner of Stages of Recovery addiction services said many people fall under peer pressure to drink heavily on New Years Eve.

"Even if they struggle with alcoholism or not, we still find ourselves drinking in excess cause supposedly that's what you're suppose to do," O'Dell said.

He said it is important to be aware of the dangers that come with drinking.

"It could lead to many different things, such as DWI 's, accidents." O'Dell said. "We know that drunk driving is one of the number one causes of deaths."

Rational thinking tends to decrease under the influence.

"It could lead to thinking that you're fine, thinking that you're capable of driving." O'Dell said. "That you can have one more, your friends are having one more, so why can't you but everybody's body reacts different."

Taylor Ellis, assistant manager at Cafe J said don't hesitate to ask for help from the staff.

"We always always recommend you take an Uber or taxi." Ellis said. "Like we always welcome you to ask your server or bartender to call one for you and we will do that for you and pay for you to get home safe."

She said plan ahead when it comes to your ride, but if you do end up driving and had to leave your car, Triple A does offer "Tipsy Tow".

"You can call the number that triple A provides and they will come pick you up free of charge whether you're a member or not," Ellis said.

Ellis said pay attention to how much you are consuming and how quickly.

"Obviously you don't want to go completely overboard." Ellis said. "The best recommendation is one drink per hour, and never chug a martini."

O'Dell said it is not necessary to drink in order to celebrate.

"There's a huge misconception that people who do not drink or use other substances are incapable of having a good time, and that just couldn't be more wrong," O'Dell said.
