Four arrested for drug, theft ring in Yoakum, Lea counties

Multiple law enforcement agencies recovered stolen items, guns and drugs in Yoakum and Lea Counties, southwest of Lubbock.

According to the DPS, troopers and Yoakum County deputies stopped a pickup near U.S. 82 and FM 435 after someone who lives nearby called authorities. While searching the truck, they found about 18 grams of heroin, three grams of cocaine and a handgun. The stolen property is valued at more than $15,000.

This led investigators to recover a stolen ATV and trailer, diesel tank, welder and tractor in another location in the county. Following arrests, investigators uncovered a stash house in Lovington, New Mexico with more stolen property, including trailers and welders.

These people were arrested and now face charges of organized crime and burglary:

  • Melinda Dominga Marroguin, 38, of Lubbock
  • Brandon Hay Gustafson, 33, of Brownfield
  • Martin L. Sanchez, 43, of Las Cruces
  • Freddy Vasquez, 46, of Lovington

DPS provided these tips since thefts and burglaries often increase during the holiday season:

  • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle while it is running. (It is also against the law to leave your keys in the ignition.)
  • Put all items in your vehicle in the trunk or hidden out of sight.  Never leave valuable items in unattended vehicles if possible.
  • At home, make certain to lock all your doors and windows and, if you have an alarm system, turn the alarm on before leaving.
  • If you leave your home for extended periods of time, let your family, friends, and neighbors know to watch your home, pickup your mail and newspapers, and request a house watch from your local law enforcement agency.
