Periodically going meatless, a step toward better health

Posted:

With the new year right around the corner, you're probably thinking of ways to live and/or eat healthier. The new year is a great way to reset, especially if you're looking to lose a few pounds.

Try going meatless one day a week. Research shows that plant-based diets are linked with a lower risk of obesity, hypertension, heart disease, type-2 diabetes and cancer.

Eating more plant foods like beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables can increase your intake of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. If you love lasagna, skip the meat and add layers of greens, broccoli and peppers..

Taco Tuesday fan? Opt for black beans or tofu.

And if you love Indian food, swap the chicken for chickpea.

"Meatless Mondays" has a nice ring to it..
