LUBBOCK, Texas -

The week leading up to Christmas often makes up more than 20% of traffic for the overall season and with a full weekend leading into the holiday retailers said they saw plenty of last minute shoppers this year.

The day after Christmas tends to mark the beginning of the end-of-the-year sales. This usually makes it the fourth busiest shopping day of the year.

"Almost all stores are ready and doing that deep discounts," said Ashley Knox, senior marketing manager for the South Plains Mall. "So for anyone who celebrates after the holidays it's a great time to do that last minute shopping your going to get some really great deals."

Shoppers are not only enjoying the after Christmas deals, they also take advantage of the hassle free exchange process. The National Retail Federation reported that three out of four holiday shoppers go a step further and check return policies before even making the purchase. Most shoppers want to return gifts they receive as soon as they can, that helps them make sure they are in the safe returning window.

"I think that retailers, you know from the retail side are totally prepared," said Knox. "They are understanding that this time of year that the gift receipts don't always make it in the box or they don't always make it through the fun of unwrapping."

If you are deciding on making any gift exchanges here are some things to keep in mind. It's important to know each individual store's policies and deadlines, keep your original receipts, and don't worry waiting a few more days will help you avoid the crowds.
